Social Competency in the Community

Students read about and analyze community-based social situations using an illustrated, short story format. Includes a student reader titled Do the Right Thing and a Teacher's Guide. Authored by June Stride and illustrated by Anthony Zammit.

Do the Right Thing student reader has 25 stories featuring Maria, Bianca, Alan and Jerome as primary protagonists. Each 6-page story begins with a vocabulary glossary and ends with comprehension questions. Engaging and realistic illustrations support the story line. Text is written in a clear, easy-to-read style, with no more than 100 words per page. Stories can be read aloud in class or students can tackle them independently. Topics include: stranger danger, hospital visit, dealing with an accident and preparing for a social event. Book is a covered spiralbound book in full color, 155 pgs., 2009.

Social Competency in the Community Teacher's Guide provides worksheets and student activities that assess story comprehension, vocabulary and the understanding of underlying social skills.
