Begin with a simple 2 item sort, blue squares and yellow circles, for example; then add all blue pieces and all yellow pieces and sort by color, then all three colors. Eventually the task can be a 36 item sort of pieces by color (3 colors), shape (3 shapes) and size (2 sizes).
