PECS is a popular and well-respected AAC training system designed for use with children with autism and related developmental disabilities.
What makes PECS so unique is the initiation component. Children are taught to approach and give a picture of a desired item to a communicative partner in exchange for that item. By doing so, the child initiates a communicative act for a concrete outcome within a social context. PECS is so simple to use that within the first day of training, many children are able to calmly and clearly make a request.
Highlights of the manual include: training procedures, methods of introducing new vocabulary, numerous examples, answers to common questions, teaching strategies, and special hints for parents.
The manual was written with both speech professionals and beginners in mind, and offers step-by-step instructions on how to implement the system to ensure success. PECS has been used with hundreds of young children with autism and other disabilities. It does not require extensive equipment, comprehensive testing, or expensive training, and it can be used in a variety of settings
